Workshop: Flowers by Mondrian

Creative drawing workshop for adults at the Mondrian House in which a flower is drawn with charcoal.

Mondrian is best known as one of the founding fathers of abstract art. Throughout his artistic career, however, he also continued to paint flowers. The common belief is that Mondrian made the flowers because he needed to earn a living, but given the great quality of these works, he must also have enjoyed creating them. Mondrian's compositions usually focus on a single flower, such as a chrysanthemum or an amaryllis. Some of his flower compositions are currently on display at the Mondrian House as part of the exhibition Mon : fleur.

In workshop Mondrian flowers you get creative with charcoal. Starting point are Mondriaan's works and real flowers. Just like Mondrian, you make a composition with a single flower. You make a first sketch with charcoal, paying attention to petals, stamens, stems, thorns and other details. Then you can use white to add some extra light or a single colour here and there. Finally, you apply a thin coat of varnish using hairspray, after which your flower can be admired in its full splendour. You can take your work home afterwards.
