During the summer holidays, the Mondrian House is organising a children's workshop 'Put the mill in the sun!'
On 22 August, children put 'the mill' in the spotlight at the Mondrian House. Inspired by Piet Mondrian who painted 'Mill by Sunlight' in 1908. If you look at the painting, you can see that Piet gave the mill a completely different colour than it actually is. When the painting was exhibited, people said, 'It looks like the mill is on fire!'
Pete set out to explore how to show the effect of sunlight in the best possible way. In this workshop, the children used their own creativity to capture sunlight in the best possible way.
The children start with the sample plate of Mondrian's mill and start drawing the mill on the canvas with coloured wasco. Only the most important lines at first, because after that we will paint. In small coloured strokes, yellow, red and dark blue, they will put their own mill in the spotlight!
Just good to know: unfortunately we cannot exhibit the real painting 'Mill in sunlight', but we do have other paintings by Mondrian showing a mill. During a short 15-minute guided tour, the theme is explained and inspiration gained. After that, the kids get to work.
