Mondrian & Jazz

Activities
Mondrian & Jazz

During Amersfoort Jazz 2017, the Mondriaanhuis will temporarily become a jazz club thanks to the Edu Ninck Blok Trio.

Mondrian's birthplace hosts several concerts dedicated to Piet Mondrian's great passion after visual art: jazz. The guiding principle is always the record collection the artist left behind when he died in 1944.
This collection, and the numerous letters Mondrian wrote, show that he had a good ear for quality. When Europeans had barely heard of Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington, Mondrian already understood that these musicians were not one-hit wonders.

'Mondrian & Jazz' will be provided by Edu Ninck Blok (trumpet/bugelhorn) and Amersfoorters Hans Knapp (guitar) and Jeroen de Valk (bass). Ninck Blok is a great connoisseur of cornet player Bix Beiderbecke, one of Mondrian's idols. The trio will perform works by Armstrong, Ellington and Beiderbecke, as well as later music inspired by them. De Valk is the biographer of Chet Baker, the great lyric trumpeter who also listened to Beiderbecke in his youth.
