LEF!

The Mondrian House will celebrate Mondrian's 150th birth anniversary in 2022 with various exhibitions and activities. One of these is an exhibition of new work by young talent with guts: artists at the start of their careers, daring to go their own wayn

In the year that marks 150 years since Piet Mondrian was born in Amersfoort, the Mondrian House is giving ample space to a new generation. In cooperation with the Utrecht School of the Arts, the museum selected five young and promising artists for the exhibition Lef! Hannah MeijerBoukje KemperMarloes RoeperMonika Nowak (Poland) and Tian Teng (China).

Marloes Roeper
A painting by Marloes Roeper (Texel, 1998) is created within one painting session. This self-imposed restriction requires good preparation, courage and focus. Roeper wants to fathom what she sees. With a minimum of brushstrokes, she tries to capture the essence of the world around her. For the exhibition at the Mondrian House, the artist painted a snowy landscape with broad strokes.

Students from ROC MIdden Nederland made a video portrait of the Marloes Roeper

Tian Teng
Chinese-born Tian Teng (Shanghai, 1996) has captured intriguing images of daily life in cities on large-format canvas. As an 'outsider' in the Netherlands, she has a fresh perspective on the ordinary, revealing extraordinary details of triviality. In doing so, she subtly plays with the concepts inside/outside, dark/light and with reality and reflection.

Hannah Meijer
For Hannah Meijer (b. 1994), exploring boundaries is a recurring theme. She believes it is important to always wonder why a certain rule is there and whether it could perhaps be reconsidered. With the installations Press(ure) I and II, the artist explores themes of limitation and oppression. The combination of different materials, hard versus soft, is essential here.

Boukje Kemper
Boukje Kemper (b. 1998) 'paints' with textiles. She is guided by memories from her childhood and by the materials and techniques she works with. Kemper is open to the coincidences that present themselves during the creative process and dares to let go of the original image she had in her head.

Monika Nowak
In the installations of Monika Nowak (Poland, 1991), humour and drama go hand in hand. The at first sight cheerful-looking situation in bright colours, raises all kinds of questions on closer inspection. What is going on here? In a visual language all her own, Nowak takes you into a world of alienation and suspense.
