Animated film Piets Dream online

In Pete's Dream - an animation, made to mark Mondrian's 150th anniversary of birth, the artist sets to work on what was to be his last painting.

To celebrate the 150th anniversary of Piet Mondrian's birth, father and son Bas and Thymen Aghina jointly made an animated film starring the famous artist.

At Piets Dream - an animation we find Piet Mondrian in 1944 New York in front of a blank canvas. He thinks aloud: 'What have I achieved in my artistic career? I once started painting landscapes and portraits. While searching and step by step, I tried to get to the essence. Trees and seascapes were increasingly abstracted into black grids and areas of red, yellow and blue. Until the painting referred only to itself. Which way can I go now? Or am I painted out anyway?'

He is about to start work on what will later prove to be his last painting, the Victory Boogie Woogie. The filmmakers have thought about what choices Mondrian could have made as well, and with their film they depict what Mondrian's last painting might have looked like.

The premiere of the film was on Sunday 20 November at the Mondrian House. And now available to watch online via YouTube:
