Thursday 7 March next marks the 147th anniversary of Piet Mondrian's birth. The Mondrian House, birthplace of the painter, is therefore organising a 'Mondrian Day' with various public activities.
Happy birthday treats, which is why a visit to the Mondrian House on 7 March is free. All visitors who come on Thursday will also be offered a Mondrian voucher in the Mondrian Café. In addition, the following activities will take place on Thursday 7 March:
Concert
From 17:30 to 18:30, jazz band will give Last Minute, consisting of four Amersfoort students, will perform at the Mondrian House. With contemporary jazz and classics from Mondriaan's era, every fan can indulge. Be inspired by jazz music, just like Mondrian, and join in for free. Walk-in from 17:00, or linger after your visit to the Mondrian House.
Lecture
Cultural historian Léon Hanssen gives the lecture: Piet Mondrian, the transatlantic flight: Paris-London-New York. In his lecture, Léon Hanssen, who is also Piet Mondrian's biographer, will discuss the geographical steps Mondrian took from continental Europe, to the New York metropolis. Hanssen will show what these transatlantic steps brought Mondrian as an artist and what major artistic developments were set in motion as a result.
Walk-in from 19:30, the lecture will start at 20:00. Expected end time is 21:15. Cost: 12.50 euros (no discount through Museum Card), including a cup of coffee or tea. Pre-registration is necessary, this can be done by sending an e-mail to [email protected]
On Mondriaandag, Kortegracht will also be decorated with Mondriaan flags made by primary school pupils from the Vrije School in Amersfoort and the Waterinkschool in Soest. This year, the flags will have a royal touch as King Willem-Alexander will visit Amersfoort on King's Day.
The Mondrian House plans to work with partners in the city to mark Mondrian's birthday every year.
