On 7 March, the 148th anniversary of Piet Mondrian's birth, the winners of the 'Inspired by Mondrian' painting competition were announced at the Mondrian House. First prize in the adult category went to Liya Poyraz.
Liya (pictured fourth from left) painted a white tiger with an abstract Mondrian composition against the background. The judges were impressed by the excellent technique of the work. The transition between the abstract and realistic parts was expertly done. The jury was also surprised by the choice of the tiger. Liya commented that she enjoys painting animals. She chose a white tiger in this case because in it all white and black are represented, two important colours in Mondrian's work. To these, the primary colours were subtly added.
The other prizes were won by:
Maartje Blom (2nd prize adults)
Gloria van Hoek (1st prize children 4 to 11 years)
Elza Baryssenka (2nd prize children 4 to 11 years)
Elvira Baryssenka (1st prize youth 12-18 years).
Daphne Vink (2nd prize youth 12-18 years)
For the 'Inspired by Mondrian' competition, there were 131 entries from all over the Netherlands. From Leeuwarden to Utrecht and from The Hague to Enschede and also from Germany. All the works will be on display at the museum throughout March.
