2017 marks the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Dutch art movement De Stijl. To celebrate, numerous inspiring events and exhibitions will take place throughout the Netherlands in 2017.
There are activities from Drachten to The Hague and from Utrecht to Eindhoven. The Mondrian House, the birthplace of Stijl artist Piet Mondrian, is also participating in the national programme.
De Stijl influenced many designers and architects and continues to inspire contemporary artists. The art movement originated in Leiden in 1917, with the founding of the magazine De Stijl by Theo van Doesburg. The artists who joined De Stijl sought a totally 'new art', which was also to modernise society. Piet Mondrian is the great example for all De Stijl artists. Even in contemporary times, the principles of De Stijl movement still inspire many Dutch designers, such as Hella Jongerius, Maarten Baas, Joris Laarman and Piet Hein Eek.
