New teaching programme for VO pupils combines theatre and visual arts. Delve into Mondrian's story with theatre performances in Flint and Aegtenkapel and a visit to the Mondrian House.
Piet Mondrian was inspired by different styles of music in his life. He was an avid jazz lover and loved to boogiewoogie on the dance floor himself. His masterpiece 'Victory Boogiewoogie' has also been called the Night Watch of the 20th century. In short: an inspiring and innovative artist who colours outside the lines with his very own story. This year, Mondrian House is celebrating the 150th anniversary of his birth.
Project content
In this project, pupils delve into the story and life of Piet Mondrian. They visit one or both of the performances Flint produces for this purpose: Outside the lines, the mystery Mondrian (11-30 October, target group: upper secondary school havo/vwo) and Art of Lines (15 October, target group: all ages and grades). This will be followed by a guided tour with in-depth workshop at the Mondrian House.
Performances
Outside the lines, the mystery Mondrian: this musical theatre performance can be seen in the beautiful Saint Aegten Chapel. Here, students witness a musical quest for the mysterious artist Mondrian. By getting to know various characters from his life, visuals and new musical compositions, they learn to look with different eyes at the genius who managed to reinvent himself time and again.
Art of Lines: Inspired by the innovation Piet Mondrian stood for, this performance features an interdisciplinary performance by the new generation of hip-hop makers, a video artist and a beat producer. This one-off performance can be seen in Flint and is produced in collaboration with KOSMIK.
Guided tour and workshop Mondrian House (approx. 60 minutes)
The Mondrian House is currently showing the exhibition Unlimited. It brings together artists from different disciplines. Just as the members of De Stijl inspired each other back then, contemporary artists and composers have been invited to meet, interact and create new work in pairs.
During the workshop at the Mondrian House, pupils experience what it is like to paint to music. What do you paint when you hear a slow melody? And what if the music is very soft or loud? Different kinds of music are played, and of course the rhythmic boogiewoogie!
Target audience:
This project is suitable for all grades and levels. However, there is a distinction in the performances:
The performance Outside the lines, the mystery Mondrian is suitable for upper secondary school (havo/vwo) and the performance Art of Lines is suitable for all grades and ages.
Price:
This project can be booked for €14 per pupil and consists of the visit to one of the two performances at Flint and the guided tour with workshop at the Mondrian House (N.B. this still does not include organisational costs).
