Winners painting competition Mondrian House

The winners of the painting competition 'Inspired by Mondrian' were announced on 7 March 2018. The competition was organised by the Mondrian House in honour of the 146th birthday of Piet Mondrian, who was born in Amersfoort in 1872.

In the youth category, first prize was won by Amélie Mac Gillavry (2nd from left). She made a painting inspired by the work Devotion By Mondrian. Amélie made the work contemporary by having the girl in the painting take a selfie. She calls her work Dephonetics. The second prize in the youth category went to Eva van Rheenen (3rd from left). Her entry refers to the paintings of Chinese artist and Mondrian admirer Liu Ye. The youngest entrant, Tim Kruiswijk (aged four, not pictured), was awarded third prize for his playful play with colours.

In the adult category, first prize was for Eeke ten Veen (centre) from Enschede. Ten Veen created a landscape in which he cleverly incorporated several of Mondrian's styles. The backdrop was the typically Dutch landscape of the Arhemheen polder, located near Amersfoort and containing Hertog Reijnhout steam pumping station. The second prize, in which Mondrian's characteristic play of planes and lines executed in primary colours recurs in a forest of skyscrapers, was for Sjanie Schoenmakers (2nd from right) and third prize went to Kim van de Wetering (left), who situated her abstract work on Amersfoort's Kortegracht with the Tower of Our Lady in the background.

In total, the Mondrian House received over a hundred entries for painting competition Inspired by Mondrian. The canvases submitted came from all parts of the country and showed varied styles and subjects, just as Piet Mondrian's oeuvre is also characterised by great diversity.

The works of all participants will be on display in the Mondrian House's DIY studio until next April 1.
